> Our pick for November 2026 is Outstep: five group challenge formats (Leaderboard, Group target, Race to X, Survivor and Step Up), team challenges with 2 to 6 teams, a notification the moment someone passes you, and anti-cheat that ignores typed-in steps. It's free for groups of up to 8 with three formats and challenges up to 30 days; Group Premium ($6.99/month for 50 people) unlocks everything. StepUp is better for huge free groups, and Stridekick for scoring activities other than steps.

November is a hard month to keep walking. The clocks go back, the evenings get dark, and the holidays are coming. A step challenge with friends is one of the best ways to keep moving, because someone notices when you stop.

Our pick for the best step challenge app this month is **Outstep**. We make it, so read this with that in mind. But we've listed every challenge feature it has, said what's free and what isn't, and said where other apps are a better fit. Facts about other apps come from their own pricing pages, help centers and store listings, **checked October 2026**.

## Why is Outstep the best step challenge app this month?

Because it's built for the part of a step challenge that actually makes people walk more: the competition. In the STEP UP randomized trial, the competition group added **920 steps a day** compared with control, more than the support or collaboration groups, and was the only group still ahead 12 weeks after it ended. Outstep makes that competition visible all day:

- **You find out the moment someone passes you,** and so do they.
- **There's a format for every group,** including ones where the person who walks the most doesn't automatically win.
- **The numbers are fair,** because typed-in steps never count.
- **iPhone and Android work together,** with or without a watch. Steps come from Apple Health on iPhone and Health Connect on Android.

## Every Outstep challenge format

Every group challenge includes the whole group automatically. A challenge runs for 7, 14 or 30 days on the free plan, or any length up to a year with custom dates on Group Premium.

| Format | How you win | Options | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Leaderboard** | Most steps in the challenge | Solo or teams | Free (teams on Group Premium) |
| **Group target** | Everyone pools steps toward one shared goal | Goal from 50,000 up; Outstep can suggest one from members' goals at Relaxed, Steady, Ambitious or Epic difficulty | Free |
| **Race to X** | First to a step total wins; ends early when everyone finishes | Finish line (default 100,000); solo or up to 4 teams | Free (teams on Group Premium) |
| **Survivor** | Hit a daily bar that rises every day; miss it and you lose a life, then you're out | 7, 10, 14 or up to 30 days; rise of 250 to 1,000 steps a day; 0, 1 or 2 lives; optional buy-back at 2× the bar | Group Premium |
| **Step Up** | Each day is scored against your own 30-day average, so the biggest improver wins | 7, 14, 21 or 30 days; optional 2× daily cap | Group Premium |

### Leaderboard

The classic: most steps between the start and end date wins. Gold goes to first place, and bronze to second and third. As a team challenge, gold goes to the winning team and a diamond to each team's MVP.

### Group target

The whole group walks toward one number, like 500,000 steps in two weeks. Everyone who contributed gets a medal if the group hits it, and the group gets notified at 50%, 100% and 150% of the goal. It's the best format for groups where one person always wins and someone else always comes last.

### Race to X

First to 100,000 steps (or whatever finish line you set) wins gold, and everyone who finishes gets bronze. The group hears when the first person crosses the line, and the race ends early once everyone has finished. It works well over a weekend or a week.

### Survivor

A daily bar starts from your group's goals and rises every day. Miss it and you lose a life; run out and you're out. Optional buy-back lets an eliminated walker return the next day by walking twice the bar. You get a warning at 9 p.m. if you're at risk, and everyone gets a morning digest of who's out, who's at risk and who bought back. It's the most dramatic format, and the one people talk about.

### Step Up

Step Up scores each day as your steps divided by your own average walking day over the previous 30 days. A 6,000-step walker who usually does 4,000 scores 1.5 that day, beating a 15,000-step walker who usually does 14,000. The optional 2× cap stops one huge day deciding it. It's the fairest format for groups with very different fitness levels.

## Team challenges

Team challenges are on Group Premium, for Leaderboard (2 to 6 teams) and Race to X (up to 4 teams).

- **Three ways to form teams:** *Balance* splits people evenly by their last 28 days of steps, *Shuffle* is random, or you *arrange* them yourself.
- **Names and emoji:** team names up to 24 characters, with one of 16 animal emoji.
- **Uneven teams** are ranked by average steps per member, so a team of 5 can beat a team of 6.
- **Moving people:** the creator or an admin can move someone to another team until the challenge ends, and their steps move with them.
- **Late joiners** go to the smallest team automatically.

## Challenge settings

| Setting | Free | Group Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Challenges running at once (per group) | 1 | Unlimited |
| Challenge length | 7, 14 or 30 days, starting today | Up to 365 days |
| Custom start and end dates | No | Yes |
| Formats | Leaderboard, Group target, Race to X | All five, plus teams |
| Group size | Up to 8 | 50, 100, 250 or 500 |
| Past results | Last 28 days | Full history |

Other settings work on every plan:

- **Who can start challenges:** everyone, or only admins and co-admins (up to 5 co-admins per group).
- **Editing:** after a challenge starts, the creator can change its name, end date and goal. Survivor and Step Up rules are locked once they start, so nobody can move the goalposts.

## Alerts during a challenge

- **New challenge:** everyone hears when one is created.
- **Pass alerts:** "You passed Sam" and "Sam passed you", for both people, the moment it happens on a daily or weekly board or a leaderboard challenge.
- **Closest battle:** when you're within 500 steps of someone.
- **Milestones:** at 50%, 100% and 150% of a Group target, and when someone finishes a race.
- **Survivor:** an at-risk warning at 9 p.m., and a morning digest for the group.

Pass and close-battle alerts are capped at 10 a day per person. Each type can be switched off, and admins can mute group notifications for everyone.

## Fair play

- **Typed-in steps never count, on any plan.** On iPhone, Outstep drops steps marked as manually entered in Apple Health. On Android, it subtracts manually entered records from the Health Connect total.
- **Strict mode** (Group Premium) counts only steps recorded by each person's own phone and Apple Watch. Steps copied in from other apps and wearables don't count.
- **Step audit** (Group Premium) shows admins every member's steps hour by hour. It flags hours over 10,000 steps, days over 50,000, suspiciously steady hours, steps dated in the future, and steps from sources that don't count. Admins can exclude someone from a challenge and restore them later.

## Results and medals

When a challenge ends, the result appears as a banner on your Home screen. Tap it for the recap: confetti, your moment in the challenge, and a share card for your group chat. Every past result opens in one history screen, kept for 28 days on free groups and forever on Group Premium.

Challenge medals sit alongside Outstep's always-free extras: streaks, badges, reactions (turtle, fire and muscle), and 8-week **seasons** where everyone in your group earns points.

## Personal challenges

For days when your group is quiet, Outstep also has challenges just for you:

| Format | Goal | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| **Daily target** | Hit a daily goal every day, for 1 to 365 days | Free |
| **Step total** | Reach a total in a set number of days | Free |
| **Ghost Race** | Beat one of your own past days, weeks or months | Outstep Plus ($2.99/mo) or Group Premium |

Personal challenges are stored on your phone, so they're lost if you uninstall the app.

## What does Outstep cost?

- **Free:** up to 3 groups of 8 people, Leaderboard, Group target and Race to X, challenges up to 30 days, pass alerts, typed-in steps blocked, no ads.
- **Group Premium:** $6.99/month or $49.99/year for a group of 50, paid by one person, and everyone in the group gets the perks. Bigger plans: $49.99/month for 100 people, $109.99 for 250 and $199.99 for 500. Includes everything in Plus. See [step challenge apps by group size](/blog/step-challenge-app-group-size) for the per-person maths.
- **Outstep Plus:** $2.99/month or $24.99/year for personal features like full Insights, Journeys and Ghost Race. It doesn't unlock group features.

## Where other apps are better

- **StepUp** if your group has hundreds or thousands of people and no budget: it's free with ads for up to 15,000. See [Outstep vs StepUp](/blog/outstep-vs-stepup).
- **Stridekick** if you want to score cycling, swimming or active minutes, not just steps. Free challenges are public and last 7 days; private ones start at $12.99/month. See [Outstep vs Stridekick](/blog/outstep-vs-stridekick).
- **Pacer** if you want a free challenge with a daily step cap per person, or a virtual race by distance.
- **Apple Watch competitions** if it's just two of you, you both wear an Apple Watch, and you're happy scoring rings instead of steps.

## Step challenge ideas for November

- **Movember 60 km.** Movember's Move challenge asks people to walk or run 60 km over the month for men's health. At a typical stride, that's about **80,000 steps**. Run it as a Race to 80,000 (if you're raising money, sign up on Movember's own site too; Outstep isn't affiliated).
- **Beat the dark evenings.** Daylight saving time ends on November 1 in the US and Canada. A two-week Survivor starting that week keeps everyone walking when it's tempting to stop. Treadmill and indoor steps count the same as outdoor ones.
- **Thanksgiving week.** US Thanksgiving is November 26. A Group target for the week ("walk off the turkey") works for mixed-age families, because everyone contributes and nobody comes last. Our [family step challenge guide](/blog/family-step-challenge) has rules.
- **Beat your October.** A Ghost Race against your own October total is a quiet personal goal for the month.
