Legal & account

The fine print, kept short. Outstep reads your step count and nothing else — these pages explain exactly what that means.

Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Outstep ("we", "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Outstep mobile app (the "App"). By using the App you agree to this Policy.

Outstep is built on a simple promise: we read one number — your daily step count — and we keep your groups private. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the control you have over it.

Information we collect

  • Account information. When you create an account we collect your email address (or, if you sign in with Apple or Google, the identifier and email those services provide) and the display name you choose.
  • Health and fitness data. With your permission, we read your daily step count from Apple Health (HealthKit) on iOS or Health Connect on Android. We read step totals only; we do not write data back to Health, and we filter out manually-entered steps. Your step counts are stored on our servers and shown to you and to members of groups you join, as part of leaderboards, streaks, challenges, and badges.
  • Approximate location (one time, optional). If you grant location access during onboarding, we use your device location once to determine your city, region, and country so we can show you anonymized city-level percentile rankings. We do not store your precise GPS coordinates or any location history — only the derived city, region, and country.
  • Activity within the App. We store the content you generate in the App, such as the groups you belong to, challenges you join, reactions you send, and badges you earn.
  • Device and notification data. To deliver push notifications (for example, when someone passes you on a leaderboard) we store a push notification token for your device. We also store basic preferences such as your time zone, daily step goal, and notification settings.
  • Purchase information. If you buy a subscription, the transaction is processed by Apple or Google and managed through our payments provider, RevenueCat. We receive your subscription status (for example, active or expired, and plan tier). We do not receive or store your full payment card details.
  • Usage data. We collect product-usage and diagnostic information — such as which screens you view, which features you use, your app version, and your device type — to understand engagement and improve the App. We use PostHog as our analytics provider. This information is associated with a per-user identifier. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not sell it.

How we use your information

  • To provide core features: step tracking, leaderboards, streaks, challenges, badges, and group membership.
  • To send notifications you've enabled.
  • To show anonymized city, region, and country percentile rankings.
  • To process and manage subscriptions.
  • To maintain security, prevent abuse, and comply with law.
  • To improve and develop the App.

Health data use is limited. Consistent with Apple and Google requirements, we do not use health or fitness data for advertising or marketing, we do not sell it, and we do not share it with data brokers or for any purpose other than providing the App's features to you and your chosen groups.

How information is shared

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only:

  • With other users you choose to interact with — members of a group you join can see your display name, step totals, streaks, badges, and ranking within that group. City, region, and country rankings use anonymized, aggregated totals — never your name attached to a public board.
  • With service providers who process data on our behalf, under contract: Supabase (backend database, authentication, and hosting), Resend (transactional email delivery, such as sign-in codes), Expo (push notification delivery), RevenueCat and Apple / Google (subscription processing), and PostHog (product-usage analytics).
  • For legal reasons — to comply with law, enforce our Terms, or protect the rights and safety of users.
  • In a business transfer — as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.

Data retention and deletion

We retain your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from within the App (Settings → Delete account). Deleting your account permanently erases your profile, step history, streaks, badges, and group memberships from our systems. For any group you administer, you will be asked to transfer the group to another member or delete it before your account is removed.

To delete data read from Apple Health or Health Connect, you can also revoke the App's access in those system settings at any time.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information, or to object to or restrict certain processing of it. You can exercise the deletion right directly in the App, or contact us at privacy@outstepapp.com for any other request. We will respond as required by applicable law.

Security

We use industry-standard measures, including encryption in transit, to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children

The App is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us at privacy@outstepapp.com and we will delete it.

International users

We operate from Canada and process data on servers that may be located in other countries. By using the App you consent to the transfer of your information to those locations.

Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version with a new effective date and, for material changes, provide notice in the App.

Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are the agreement between you and Outstep ("we", "us") covering your use of the Outstep mobile app and related services (the "App"). We've tried to keep them readable, but they are a binding contract. By creating an account or using the App, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy.

1. Who can use Outstep

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use the App only with the involvement of a parent or guardian. By using the App, you confirm you meet these requirements and can enter into this agreement.

2. Your account

You're responsible for activity on your account and for keeping your login secure. Provide accurate information when you sign up, and let us know if you spot unauthorized use. You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete account.

3. What Outstep does

Outstep lets you track your daily steps (read from Apple Health or Health Connect with your permission), join invite-only groups, compete on leaderboards, build streaks, take on challenges, and earn badges. We may add, change, or remove features over time.

4. Fair play

Outstep counts the steps your Health app reports. To keep competition fair, you agree not to:

  • Submit step data you didn't genuinely generate, or spoof, inject, or otherwise fake counts to climb a leaderboard, extend a streak, win a challenge, or earn a badge.
  • Harass, abuse, or harm other members, or use offensive content in a display name, group name, or anywhere else in the App. Be decent to the people you walk with.
  • Use the App for any unlawful purpose, or access, disrupt, reverse engineer, or interfere with the App, its systems, or other users' data.

We may remove content, or suspend or terminate accounts, that violate these Terms.

5. Subscriptions, billing, and renewals

Outstep is free to use. Premium is an optional paid subscription that unlocks additional features.

  • The backer model. Subscribing makes you a "backer." While your subscription is active, Premium features unlock for groups you own or back — so one member's subscription can benefit the whole group.
  • Billing. Subscriptions are sold monthly or annually and are processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play, charged to your store account. Prices and plans are shown in the App at the time of purchase.
  • Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Your store account is charged within 24 hours before renewal.
  • Managing and canceling. Manage or cancel anytime in your Apple App Store or Google Play account settings. Deleting the App does not cancel a subscription.
  • Refunds. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their policies; we don't process refunds directly.
  • Promotional pricing. Introductory or promotional prices apply only as described at purchase and for the stated period.

6. Health disclaimer

Outstep is a fitness and motivation app — not a medical device or a source of medical advice. Step counts are estimates from your device and may be inaccurate. Talk to a qualified healthcare professional before starting any exercise program. You take part in physical activity at your own risk.

7. Your content and groups

You're responsible for the content you add, including your display name and any group names you create. You grant us a license to host and display that content as needed to run the App. Group administrators manage their group's membership. If you delete your account while administering a group, you'll be asked to transfer the group to another member, or the group is deleted if you're its only member.

8. Our intellectual property

The App — including its software, design, and branding — belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by law. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App for your personal, non-commercial use, subject to these Terms.

9. Termination

You can stop using the App and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you violate these Terms or if we discontinue the App. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — such as the disclaimers, intellectual property, and limitation of liability — will survive.

10. Disclaimers

The App is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don't warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or accurate.

11. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Outstep will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits or data, arising from your use of the App. Our total liability for any claim relating to the App will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or CAD $100.

12. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We'll post the updated version with a new effective date and, for material changes, give notice in the App. Continuing to use Outstep after changes take effect means you accept the revised Terms.

13. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable there, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. You agree that the courts located in Ontario, Canada will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute that is not resolved informally.

14. Contact us

Apple is not a sponsor of, and is not involved in, any Outstep subscription or challenge, and is not responsible for the App. These Terms are between you and Outstep only.

Account deletion

Delete your account

You can permanently delete your Outstep account and the data tied to it at any time. Deletion removes your profile, your step history, your badges, and your membership in every group.

Open Outstep and go to Profile → Settings.

Tap Delete account at the bottom of the settings list.

Confirm. Your data is queued for deletion and removed within 30 days.

Prefer to delete by email? Write to privacy@outstepapp.com from the address on your account and we'll process the deletion for you. This is permanent and can't be undone — step history and badges cannot be restored.

What gets removed

  • Your profile, display name, and email.
  • All synced step totals and history.
  • Streaks, badges, and challenge records.
  • Your membership in every group you've joined.

Stuck on a sync, a group invite, or a subscription? Most issues are quick to sort out.

Common fixes

  • Steps not updating? Open your Health app and confirm Outstep still has permission to read steps, then reopen Outstep.
  • Joined a group but can't see it? Double-check the invite code — they're case-sensitive.
  • Premium not showing for everyone? Premium unlocks for the whole group once one member subscribes; give it a moment to propagate.
