The right step challenge app depends mostly on one number: how many people are in it. A challenge between two friends needs pass alerts and a bit of trash talk. A 300-person challenge needs teams, admins, anti-cheat and a price that doesn't double the budget. Most apps are good at one end and awkward at the other.
This guide goes through group sizes from 2 to 500, with the app limits and prices that matter at each size. We make Outstep, which works for groups of 2 to 500, so it shows up throughout; we've been clear about where other apps fit better, especially above 500. Prices and limits come from each app's own pricing page, help center or store listing, checked October 2026.

What changes as a step challenge gets bigger?
Three things break as a group grows, and the best app for your size is the one that handles them.
1. The leaderboard stops motivating most people. In a group of 6, everyone's in the race. In a group of 300, the top 10 are decided by people who walk 20,000 steps a day, and everyone else quietly stops checking. Research backs this up: in a large study of walking competitions in a fitness app, winners raised their activity by about 25%, while people who finished last ended up walking about 4% less than usual. Bigger groups need formats that give the middle of the pack something to play for. More in do step competitions actually work?
2. One organizer can't run it alone. Past about 20 people you'll want co-admins, control over who can start challenges, and a way to stop notifications overwhelming everyone.
3. Cheating starts to matter. In a family challenge, a fake 60,000-step day gets laughed at. In a workplace challenge with a prize, it causes a complaint. Large groups need an app that ignores typed-in steps and lets an admin review unusual days. See how to stop cheating in a step challenge.
Best step challenge app for 2 people
For two people, you want a direct rivalry: who's ahead right now, and by how much.
- Outstep (free): create a group of two and you get daily, weekly (Monday to Sunday) and monthly boards, a notification the moment one of you passes the other, and a "closest battle" alert when you're within 500 steps. Head-to-head shows your record against each other, including who wins more days. Reactions (turtle, fire, muscle) handle the trash talk. Every free challenge format works with two people.
- Apple Watch Activity competitions (free): if you both wear an Apple Watch, you can run a 7-day, one-on-one competition scored on closing your rings, up to 600 points a day. It scores ring percentages rather than steps, so whoever sets a lower Move goal has an edge, and Android users can't join.
Formats that work for two: a weekly head-to-head, Race to X (first to 100,000 steps), or Step Up if one of you walks far more than the other, because it scores each day against your own 30-day average. For couples and friends in different cities, see step challenges for couples and long-distance friends.
Best step challenge app for 3–8 people
This is the classic friends or family group, and it's where free apps are strongest.
- Outstep is free for up to 3 groups of 8 people, with no ads. You get live leaderboards, pass alerts, and three challenge formats: Leaderboard (most steps), Group target (everyone pools steps toward one goal) and Race to X. Challenges run up to 30 days, one at a time per group. Everyone can use iPhone or Android, with or without a watch.
- StepUp is free with ads, and its groups are far bigger than you need at this size. It has one competition type: most steps in a period.
- Samsung Health Together is free and holds up to 10 people, but it's built for Galaxy phones, and recent reviews report problems syncing with iPhone friends.
- Stridekick's free challenges hold 10 people but have been public and limited to 7 days since 2025. Private challenges need Pro, from $12.99/month for 10 people.
Formats that work for 3–8: mix it up. Run a weekly leaderboard all the time and add a monthly Group target, so the person who always comes last still contributes to a shared win. For mixed ages and phones, our family step challenge guide has rules you can copy.
Best step challenge app for 9–50 people
Groups of 9 to 50 are friend groups that grew, extended families, clubs, small teams at work, and church or school groups. This is the size where prices start to diverge.
| App | 20 people | 50 people | Team challenges |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outstep Group Premium | $6.99/mo or $49.99/yr | $6.99/mo or $49.99/yr | Yes, 2–6 teams |
| Stridekick Pro | $24.99/mo | $49.99/mo | Unlimited plan only |
| StepUp | Free with ads | Free with ads | No |
| Pacer | Free challenges | Free challenges | Not published |
Outstep Group Premium covers up to 50 people for $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year, paid by one person. Everyone in the group gets the group's perks, and there's a free trial on the 50-person plan. It adds:
- Every challenge format, including Survivor (a daily bar that rises each day, with lives) and Step Up (scored against your own baseline).
- Team challenges with 2 to 6 teams.
- Unlimited challenges at once, up to 365 days long, with custom dates.
- Strict mode and Step audit for fair play.
- Full group history and group analytics, plus a custom colour and emoji for the group.
StepUp is the free option at this size. It's simple and reliable, but it has ads, one competition format, and no team scoring. See Outstep vs StepUp for a full comparison.
Pacer lets you create free challenges on any phone and set a daily step cap per person. It doesn't publish a group size limit.
Formats that work for 9–50: at this size, a plain leaderboard starts to leave people behind. Outstep's boards for groups of 9 or more show the podium plus the people just above and below you, so you're racing your neighbours rather than staring at rank 31. Add a team challenge once a month, and use Step Up or Survivor when the same three people keep winning.
Best step challenge app for large groups (51–500 people)
Large groups are workplaces, schools, gyms, churches, running clubs and online communities. At this size, admin tools, fairness and price per person matter most.
| App | 100 people | 250 people | 500 people | Team challenges | Anti-cheat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outstep | $49.99/mo | $109.99/mo | $199.99/mo | Yes, 2–6 teams | Manual steps never count; Strict mode; hourly audit |
| Pacer for Teams | $454/mo | Not checked | $1,429/mo | Yes | Optional manual entry; admin score override |
| StepUp | Free | Free | Free | No | Manual entry blocked |
| Stridekick Unlimited | Quote | Quote | Quote | Yes | Daily caps, rescoring |
Outstep: best for large groups up to 500
Outstep's Group Premium comes in 100, 250 and 500 person sizes. That works out to about 50 cents a person per month at 100, 44 cents at 250 and 40 cents at 500. The 100 and 250 plans are also available yearly, at $449.99 and $999.99. One person pays, through the App Store or Google Play, and everyone in the group gets the perks. Another member with Group Premium can also back the group, so the cost can move to whoever's organizing.
What makes it work at this size:
- Teams that balance themselves. Choose 2 to 6 teams and Outstep splits people evenly by their last 28 days of steps, or shuffles them at random, or you arrange them by department. Uneven teams are ranked by average steps per member, and late joiners go to the smallest team automatically.
- Admins and co-admins. Up to 5 co-admins can help run the group, and you can decide whether everyone or only admins can start challenges.
- Notifications that don't overwhelm people. Each person gets at most 10 pass and close-battle alerts a day, everyone can switch types off, and an admin can mute group notifications for everyone.
- Fair play. Manually entered steps never count. Strict mode counts only steps recorded by each person's own phone (and Apple Watch on iPhone), and Step audit shows admins every member's steps by hour, flagging hours over 10,000 and days over 50,000.
- Formats for the middle of the pack. Group target gives everyone a shared win, and Step Up rewards improvement, so a 5,000-step walker can beat a marathoner.
Not ideal if you need SSO, HR integrations, invoices, data exports or a rewards catalogue, or want to score cycling and swimming alongside steps. Outstep only scores steps, and it's billed as an app subscription. Strict mode also leaves out Garmin and Fitbit steps, so tell people before you turn it on.
Pacer for Teams: best for admin exports
Pacer for Teams publishes its prices: $454/month for 100 participants, $1,429 for 500 and $2,495 for 1,000, with no contract and a 7-day free trial for up to 10 people. It has individual and team leaderboards, teams by department or location, admin exports and score overrides, and a built-in pedometer.
StepUp: best free app for large groups
StepUp groups hold up to 15,000 people for free, with daily, weekly and monthly leaderboards and a custom date range. For a large group with no budget, nothing else comes close. The trade-offs grow with the group: ads, no team scoring, and no published protection against phone shakers. More in StepUp alternatives.

What about groups over 500?
Outstep's largest group is 500 people. Above that, the realistic choices are:
- StepUp, free for up to 15,000 people, if a simple leaderboard is enough.
- Pacer for Teams, $2,495/month for 1,000 participants, if you need admin tools and exports.
- An enterprise wellness platform (Wellable, YuMuuv, GoJoe, Personify Health) if the challenge is part of a wider wellness program with rewards and HR integrations.
You can also split a big organization into several Outstep groups of up to 500, such as one per office or campus. Each group then needs its own plan, and they don't share a leaderboard.
Which challenge format fits your group size?
| Format | 2 people | 3–8 | 9–50 | 51–500 | Plan on Outstep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leaderboard (most steps wins) | Great | Great | Good | Only the top cares | Free |
| Race to X (first to a total) | Great | Great | Good | Good with teams | Free (teams: Group Premium) |
| Group target (pool steps toward one goal) | Good | Great | Great | Great | Free |
| Team leaderboard | — | Fair | Great | Best | Group Premium |
| Step Up (scored against your own baseline) | Great for mismatched pairs | Great | Great | Great | Group Premium |
| Survivor (rising daily bar, with lives) | Fun | Great | Great | Good, but long | Group Premium |
The pattern: the bigger the group, the more you want teams, shared goals and improvement-based scoring, and the less you want a single "most steps wins" board. Our 12 step challenge ideas have copyable rules for each, and 200+ team names if you need them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best step challenge app for large groups?
For a large group of up to 500 people that wants team challenges and anti-cheat, Outstep Group Premium costs $49.99 a month for 100 people and $199.99 for 500. For a free option, StepUp holds up to 15,000 people with ads but no team scoring. Pacer for Teams adds admin exports, from $454 a month for 100.
Is there a free step challenge app for 100 people?
Yes. StepUp is free with ads for groups of up to 15,000, and Pacer lets you create free challenges without a published size limit. Neither has team scoring built in. Outstep's free groups hold 8 people; larger groups need Group Premium.
How many people can be in an Outstep group?
Up to 8 on the free plan, and 50, 100, 250 or 500 with Group Premium, depending on the plan size. You can be in up to 3 groups for free, or unlimited groups with Group Premium.
Does everyone in a large group have to pay?
Not on Outstep. One person's Group Premium subscription makes the whole group premium, and every member gets the group's formats, teams and fair-play features for free. On Stridekick Pro and Pacer for Teams, the organizer pays for the whole group too.
How do you keep a big step challenge motivating?
Use teams, a shared group target, or a format that scores improvement instead of raw totals, so people outside the top 10 still have something to play for. Keep challenges to 2 to 4 weeks, announce weekly winners, and make prizes random draws or team rewards rather than "most steps wins".
What's the best step challenge app for two people?
If you both wear an Apple Watch, Apple's built-in 7-day competitions are free and easy. If one of you has Android or you want to compare actual steps, Outstep is free for two people, with pass alerts, close-battle alerts and a head-to-head record.
